Shopify loves in-person, HBO drops the ball, YouTube tests new ways to push Premium
House of the Dragon fans, it's not just you. Many viewers, including yours truly, couldn't see anything at times during Sunday's episode. What was most likely an editing mistake, HBO has chalked up to be an "intentional creative decision". There you have it folks. Not being able to see what you're watching is now a feature, not a bug...
Wait... They shipped what!?
Shopify launched POS-Go, a handheld point-of-sale (POS) device for retailers.
Details: The new offering focuses on unifying online and in-person shopping by leveraging the broader Shopify platform. POS-Go allows merchants to:
See a particular customers previous purchases
Build carts in-store and email a link to finalize checkout later
View live sales and inventory data on-device
Operate portably without a phone or computer
Why it matters: Like many other pandemic-darlings, Shopify's business has taken a big hit as the pandemic wanes, with it's stock price down 80% in the last year.
In the same vein of Instacart announcing tools for in-store shopping a few weeks ago, Shopify is banking on in-person sales to turn things around. The company even promoted it's Merchant Services VP of Product to COO.
What to watch: How will competitive dynamics play out?
It's a crowded space, with players such as Square, Toast, and Clover, as well as Apple's new Tap & Pay offering.
