Drones bring the ads, Robinhood gives 3.75% interest, Hulu hikes prices again
Happy Monday! Candy Crush took to the skies, using 500 drones to blast Manhattan residents with an ad to mark the game's ten-year anniversary. No doubt most folks who saw the ad stopped playing Candy Crush eons ago, but guess marketers gotta get them eyeballs somehow...
Wait... They shipped what!?
Robinhood Gold members now get 3.75% interest on cash sitting in brokerage accounts.
Backstory: Gold is Robinhood's $5 per month premium offering, giving users access to professional research and enhanced margin investing.
Details: The new cash sweeps program deposits uninvested cash into partner bank accounts to generate interest. For users, this means:
3.75% on all cash sitting in brokerage accounts
FDIC insured up to $1.5m balance
Interest paid out monthly
Why it matters: 3.75% is higher than the vast majority of savings accounts, meaning that most people stand to make money by signing up to the premium subscription and transferring cash to Robinhood.
It's a killer hook for both existing user upsell and new user growth. With the later, there'll undoubtedly be strong cross-sell as users who sign up to generate interest end up investing as a result of Robinhood's gamified trading features.
Separately, 3.75% interest (with FDIC insurance) for consumers is wild. Taking a punt on speculative investments or trying to farm yields with DeFi becomes a lot less attractive when you can bank serious money with zero risk.
The rates only going up from here.
