AI for all

Apple is no match, DALLE-2 gets an API, Wealthfront ups APY to 3.30%

Wild stat to end the week - Apple's now worth as much as Meta, Amazon, and Google COMBINED. Meta's market cap of ~$230b is now only worth 10% of Apple. Can already hear the sound of regulators shifting their scopes from Zuck's metaverse to Cook's App Store and "privacy" funny business.

Wait... They shipped what!?

Open AI shipped a public API for DALLE-2.

Backstory: Only those with strong Open AI relationships, such as Microsoft and Shutterstock, have so far been allowed to integrate DALLE-2 into their products.

Details: Now, any developer can build Open AI's image-generation capabilities into their websites and apps. Highlights include:

  • $0.016 - $0.02 per image pricing, with enterprise volume discounts

  • Per user limit rate of 10 images a minute

  • Open AI's content moderation is automatically passed through

  • Images will no longer be watermarked by DALLE-2

Why it matters: We're going to see a lot more of DALLE-2. Given the newfound obsession with AI-generated images, I'd be surprised if there's many creative / design / photography products that aren't considering adding generative-AI.

As the ethical and legal debate against generative-AI rages on, it's going to get harder and harder to put the genie back in the bottle, especially if creative folks get accustomed to using AI image-generation in their everyday products.

For Open AI, the API represents a distribution lever that gives the company a major leg up against the likes of Stable Diffusion and MidJourney.
